Exploring Interfaith Harmony

Center for Interfaith Studies in Africa

Discover the journey of interfaith dialogue and research, fostering peace and understanding across diverse faith traditions.

Our Journey and Mission

The Center for Interfaith Studies in Africa (CISA) was born from a vision of unity and understanding, officially inaugurated in January 2024 at Hekima University College. This initiative was spearheaded by Fr. A.E. Orobator, SJ, who, in 2020, began crucial conversations about addressing religious pluralism in Sub-Saharan Africa. The journey was enriched by the generous donation of Daniel A. Madigan, SJ’s extensive Islamic studies collection, forming the cornerstone of our academic pursuits. Initially focusing on Islam and Muslim-Christian relations, CISA is committed to expanding its research to include African Traditional Religions and Hindu communities, fostering a comprehensive platform for dialogue and education. Our mission is to bridge gaps through research, lectures, and outreach, promoting tolerance and countering radicalization, guided by Jesuit principles of interreligious engagement.

Our Goals

At the Center for Interfaith Studies in Africa, our primary goal is to nurture a culture of dialogue and understanding among diverse religious communities. We are dedicated to advancing interfaith research that not only enriches academic discourse but also fosters peaceful coexistence. By promoting scholarly collaboration and public engagement, we aim to bridge gaps and build lasting relationships across faith traditions.

Commitment to Dialogue

Our commitment extends beyond academic pursuits. We strive to create inclusive spaces where individuals from different faith backgrounds can come together to share insights and experiences. Through conferences, workshops, and publications, we encourage open conversations that challenge stereotypes and promote mutual respect. Our ultimate aim is to contribute to a more harmonious society where religious diversity is celebrated.

Initial Focus

Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations

In its early stages, CISA has concentrated on the critical area of Islam and Muslim-Christian relations. This focus is not only timely but also essential, given the complex interfaith dynamics in Africa. Leveraging the extensive collection donated by Daniel A. Madigan, SJ, we delve into the historical and contemporary interactions between these two major faiths. Our research seeks to illuminate pathways for dialogue and cooperation, addressing both challenges and opportunities in fostering peaceful coexistence.

Future Expansion

Broadening Our Horizons

Looking ahead, CISA is poised to broaden its research scope to encompass a wider array of faith traditions. We plan to engage with African Traditional Religions and Hindu communities, recognizing their significant cultural and spiritual contributions in the region. By expanding our research and dialogue initiatives, we aim to create a comprehensive platform that supports diverse religious voices and promotes intercultural understanding. This expansion reflects our commitment to inclusivity and our belief in the transformative power of interfaith engagement.
